What is IDAC?
Intercultural Diversity Advisory Council (IDAC) draws members from parents to represent our school at district level climate assessment/problem-solving meetings. The primary purpose of the Intercultural Diversity Advisory Council (IDAC), originally formed in 1988 as the Intercultural Advisory Council, is to assist in the formation and review of policies that assure non-discriminatory practices in all operational areas of the Clovis Unified School District. Its further mission is to assist in improving the cultural environment of the District.

Meetings
Temperance-Kutner Elementary School will conduct four IDAC meetings during the 2024-2035 school year in order to continue to build cultural competency.

First Quarter:
October 15, 2024, 6PM, TK MPR
At our Quarter 1 IDAC meeting we celebrated our Southeast Asian culture here at TK! We shared the purpose and expectations of IDAC going forward for the year. We had one of our student teachers, Mr. Singh, perform the tabla. This is an Indian percussion instrument that has two drums that are played simultaneously. A guest speaker presented on his family’s journey from Pakistan and the cultural differences between how he grew up in Pakistan and then here in the United States. We ended the night enjoying samosas and gulab jamun from a local Indian restaurant!

Positivity Project
The Positivity Project (P2) empowers students to build positive relationships and become their best selves by focusing on positive psychology’s 24 character strengths, such as bravery, perseverance, integrity, and gratitude. P2 partners with Pre-K–12 schools, providing the resources, training, and strategies to help students understand and apply these strengths. This holistic approach involves students, educators, and families, fostering a positive school culture that supports teaching and learning.

Human Relations Council
Students in grades 1st-6th gather together to plan activities and events that promote positive relationships and spread kindness with students on campus. HRC focuses on celebrating everyone's unique differences and the diversity within our school and community. It thrives to spread kindness through a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizenship is a curriculum that helps students, teachers, and parents understand the importance of using technology appropriately and safely. Digital citizenship is more than just a teaching tool. It helps students develop digital citizenship skills that enable them to make smart choices online with social media and in life.

Student Council

Temperance-Kutner student council members take an active role in promoting a positive and inclusive school environment through various activities on campus. This includes, leading the pledge of allegiance, proudly stating our school and positivity project pledges during community and school events, and welcoming students on campus each morning with a smile at parent pick-up. Student council assists with Friday announcements, PTC events, community food canned food drives, and staff appreciation days.

Parent input is invited and encouraged through a number of site and community groups. These groups allow for on-going dialogue between diverse parent groups and school staff. These opportunites include the following:

Back To School Night
A welcoming school environment during back to school night, with parents and students engaging with teachers and staff.

Back to school night is the kick-off to the school year. Parents come together on campus to meet staff, learn about the exciting events of the coming school year, and get to know one another.
School Carnival
The school carnival is held in early fall. This event allows for families to come together to enjoy food, games, and vendors together. What a great way to get to know each other - having fun as one!

School Carnival

Open House
Open House happens toward the end of the 3rd quarter. This is an opportunity for families to come together on campus and for students to showcase all the learning students have done throughout the school year.

Promoting Cultural Differences

TK Hmong Dance Team
The TK Hmong dance team is made up of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students interested in learning more about the Hmong culture and presenting traditional dances to their peers and the community. Through traditional dance, students honor the Hmong heritage, while educating their peers about its cultural significance. It serves as a platform for better understanding, appreciation, and unity within the school community.

African Drum Interactive
The African Drum Interactive is a small family owned business in the Central Valley. They came to perform for TK and preserve the cultural significance of African Drumming. It was an interactive experience with students and staff learning traditional dances.

School-Wide Multicultural Activities
Temperance-Kutner is committed to providing additional experiences for our students that promote inclusivity and diversity. Positivity Project lessons and activities, assemblies such as the African Drum Interactive Group, multicultural books both digital and available in the TK library, and a multicultural board in the cafeteria that is changed out monthly based on upcoming events.

TK Folklorico Dance Team
The TK Folklorico dance team represents the vibrant tapestry of Mexican culture through its performances. It is composed of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who aim to learn about different cultures, build confidence, and foster a sense of community. Through traditional music, costumes, and dances, they strive to deepen the students and community appreciation of Mexican culture.
